Auditory Nostalgia

This piece was showcased in the Champlain College gallery during Fluxfest 2023

Artist Statement

This piece explores the idea of nostalgia, and how the sounds of a space play a large role in our memories of it. Titled, “Auditory Nostalgia”, this soundscape was built solely from recordings of Graham’s New England childhood home. The process of recording was both a solo experience and a family one, as Graham’s mother provided a few of the recordings while he was at college.

The process of creating a space so familiar, but far away, evokes this dream-like reality, which is a concept played with throughout the track. Day turns to night at the close of a door, and inside becomes outside as the listener is engulfed in the night of New England’s spring peepers. Though these specific sounds may only be from one home, the idea of nostalgia through sound is ever-present in the shared human experience.
